Arranging zones

Hedgerow can line your zones up for you, and helps you line them up by hand.

The grid

Each monitor has a grid of equal cells, with a margin around the edge and a small gap between cells. Hedgerow picks the number of columns and rows to suit the monitor's size. While you drag or resize a zone with snapping on, the grid appears on every monitor, and the zone moves and resizes in whole cells. Hold Alt to place a zone freely instead. A zone placed freely is no longer on the grid.

To choose the grid yourself, open Settings, find Arranging, and clear Automatic grid for a monitor. Then set Columns and Rows, from 1 to 48. Choose Apply, and Hedgerow rescales your zones to the new grid in one step. Zones that are not on the grid stay where they are. Tick Automatic grid again to go back to the automatic size. Settings for a monitor that is unplugged are kept for when it returns.

Tidy and snap

Tidy zones fits your zones to the grid. Choose it on the Home or Zones page, in the tray menu or in the desktop menu. On every monitor, zones are taken in reading order, with the Desktop zone first. Each zone gets the nearest whole-cell size and is packed into rows of cells. A zone that does not fit stays where it is, and Hedgerow tells you which monitor it was.

Before it moves anything, Hedgerow saves a "Before Tidy zones" snapshot. Choose Undo on the Zones page to put the zones back. Undo stays there until the layout next changes.

With snapping on, a zone you move or resize lines up with the cells. To turn snapping off, clear Snap zones while moving them under Arranging on the Settings page.

Ctrl+arrow moves a zone and Alt+arrow resizes it: a zone on the grid by one cell, with snapping on or off, and any other zone in small steps.
